IP ratings (IP44, IP55, IP65): choosing a junction box or enclosure

The first IP digit rates protection against solids and dust, the second against water (IEC 60529). Which rating suits indoor, outdoor and wet areas?

The IP code shows how well an enclosure is protected against solids (first digit) and water (second digit), under IEC 60529. An IP44 enclosure is protected against objects over 1 mm and splashing water. IP55 is dust-protected and protected against water jets. IP65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets: it suits very exposed outdoor spots and hosed-down areas.

How do you read an IP rating?

An IP rating is read one digit at a time. The first digit covers protection against solid objects and dust. The second covers protection against water. The higher the digit, the stronger the protection. One exception for water: digits 7 and 8 (immersion) do not include 5 and 6 (jets). An enclosure tested for both carries a dual marking, such as IP66/IP67.

First digit Protection against solids
0 No protection
1 Objects over 50 mm (the back of a hand)
2 Objects over 12.5 mm (fingers)
3 Objects over 2.5 mm (tools, thick wires)
4 Objects over 1 mm (fine wires)
5 Dust-protected: some dust may enter but does not interfere with operation
6 Dust-tight
Second digit Protection against water
0 No protection
1 Vertically falling drops
2 Falling drops with the enclosure tilted up to 15°
3 Spraying water, up to 60° from vertical
4 Splashing water from any direction
5 Water jets
6 Powerful water jets
7 Temporary immersion
8 Continuous immersion, under conditions set by the manufacturer

An “X” stands in for a digit that was not tested. A LEO surface pump marked IPX4 is therefore protected against splashing water. An IPX8 submersible pump withstands continuous immersion. Neither has a declared dust rating. See our guide to choosing a water pump.

Which IP rating suits which location?

The location determines the rating. In Kinshasa, tropical downpours and dry-season dust call for a high rating as soon as a box is outdoors.

Location Exposure Suggested rating
Dry indoor areas: bedrooms, offices, corridors No water, little dust Any box suited to the mounting
Kitchen, shower room, garage, covered porch Splashing water IP44 or higher
Outdoors: façade, yard, car park Rain, dust IP55 or higher
Very exposed outdoor spots, pump or generator rooms, hosed-down areas Driving rain, water jets, fine dust IP65

These are practical guidelines, not regulations. The applicable wiring rules and your electrician's advice come first.

How do you keep a box or enclosure sealed?

An IP rating only holds if the box is fitted correctly. A single open cable entry is enough to let water and dust in.

  1. Fit every cable entry with a cable gland sized for the cable.
  2. Tighten the gland on the cable sheath.
  3. Keep unused entries closed.
  4. Bring cables in from below where possible.
  5. Check that the lid gasket is seated, then close the lid fully.

Winline offers PVC cable glands from 16 to 32 mm and PG cable glands from PG07 to PG42. Our product data does not give their IP rating, so check with us before fitting them to an IP65 box.

For an outdoor distribution board, the WN-E2024 waterproof distribution box gives 24 ways at IP65. The WN-E2012 box gives 12 ways with the same protection. For an outdoor junction, the WN-BT009C waterproof box with transparent cover is rated IP55.

For indoor use, the range also includes surface-mounted and flush-mounted distribution boxes from 12 to 36 ways. It also includes PVC junction boxes for 20 and 25 mm conduit. Our product data gives them no IP rating. Choose the number of ways for a distribution box from the number of circuits, with your electrician.
