Pumps: what to know

Our 23 LEO and Bison water pumps cover everyday water needs. They boost pressure at home, draw water from a well or tank, circulate pool water and empty a tank or pit. The range also includes three petrol water pumps to move water where there is no mains power. The electric pumps whose datasheet states the supply are single-phase. The LEO ACM75 also comes in a three-phase version.

Choosing a pump

Start from the water source: mains, tank, well or a tank to empty. Then three values on the datasheet decide.

  • Head. Add the suction lift, the height to lift, the losses in the pipes and the pressure you want at the tap (1 bar ≈ 10 m): that is the total head.
  • Flow. This is the amount of water you need, in L/min or m³/h.
  • Suction lift. A surface pump draws water from about 8 m at most. Beyond that, you need a pump placed in the water.

Our guide on which water pump for a house compares every LEO pump family in one table.

Pumps and generators

An electric pump starts like any motor: it draws several times its running power at start-up. According to our finder, a 1.1 kW pump started direct-on-line needs a generator of about 4.5 kVA on its own. To keep your pumps running during outages, work out your generator size with all your appliances.

Prices, delivery and service

Our prices are given on request, by WhatsApp or email from each pump's page. We deliver in Kinshasa and to the other provinces of the DRC. We provide installation, maintenance and spare parts for the pumps we sell: see our services.

Frequently asked questions

Which pump raises water pressure at home?

An automatic booster pump starts when you open a tap and stops when you close it. The LEO PQ50E-1 (0.37 kW) has a maximum head of 30 m and a maximum flow of 33 L/min. For more pressure, a peripheral pump such as the LEO APM110 (up to 85 m) is also suitable. It then works with a pressure switch and a tank, or a pressure controller; 85 m is its shut-off head. See our guide on which water pump for a house.

How deep can a surface pump draw water from?

In practice, about 8 m. The datasheets give 8 m for the LEO APM, ACM and 2ACM, and 9 m for the AJM110H jet pump. Beyond that, you need a pump placed in the water. See our guide on which water pump for a house.

What are your submersible pumps for?

Drainage and removal of dirty or waste water (LEO AKS-751PWH, LSWM100A, LSWM150A, QDX1.5-32-0.75LA). Emptying a rainwater tank (LKS-300P). And, for the STK50F, pumping while submerged down to 10 m.

Maximum head and maximum flow: how do I read the datasheet?

Maximum head is reached at almost zero flow. Maximum flow is reached when the pump lifts almost nothing. In use, the pump works between the two. Choose it for the flow you need at your total head, which is the suction lift, the height to lift, the pipe losses and the pressure you want at the tap. Our guide on which water pump for a house works through an example.

Are your submersible pumps suitable for a deep borehole?

No. The submersible pumps in our current catalogue are for drainage, waste water, tanks and pumping while submerged down to 10 m (STK50F). They are not designed for a deep borehole. Describe your borehole to us and we will tell you what is possible. See our guide on which water pump for a house.
